We loved having Gabe and Naomi over and experiencing a “traditional” Czech Christmas with them. We spent just under a week in Prague to show them the city and meet some of the Christians, then we headed back to Olomouc to get to work (and have some fun of course). Meeting the people is the best way to get to know the culture of a location. So, once in Olomouc, we introduced Gabe and Naomi to as many of our Czech friends as possible. Women spend days cooking 10+ different types of cookies to share with friends a family. Some women even trade with one another to show off their cookies and baking abilities. Naomi and I met up with our friend Eva and she showed us how to make three different types of traditional cukroví. To get in all the Christmas cookie fun, we baked some typical American cookies (chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, double chocolate, gingerbread, rice crispy treats) and shared them with our friends and community. Since most people are getting plenty of Czech cookies from friends and family, we figured we should give them cookies they might not get as often and share in each other's culture. This Thanksgiving we were away from our family in the States, but we did not miss out on all the traditions. We used this opportunity to invite some of our closest friends over to share in the American holiday (we would have invited all our friends if we had the room). We had a total of 10 friends come over to share a meal, play games, and make hand-turkey drawings. This is the third Thanksgiving Tony and I have spent together, but it was our first time hosting it. We had so much fun and hope to make it a yearly tradition. Being in Europe, it did look slightly different from a classic American Thanksgiving. For instance, it is nearly impossible to find a whole turkey here, so we had to settle for parts (turkey breasts, thighs, and legs), and the green bean casserole was made without the fried onions (arguably the best part). Luckily, Tony was able to bring back some traditional staples from his recent trip to America, like brown gravy and boxed stuffing! This month I was able to invest in a friendship with someone Tony has studied with before. It was a girls' trip with my friend Anna to see the Christmas markets in Vienna. As I write this at 4:30pm, it is already dark here and the days will keep getting shorter and shorter. The summer made socializing so easy. Everyone seemed to have more free time, and the nice weather made it possible to meet and hang out anywhere. Making connections and building trustworthy friendships will just require us to be more intentional within the coming months. So, October was a month for planning for the future. We have officially planned a date for our first visitors from abroad! Gabe and Naomi are both students at BVBI and have hearts for missions. They are both currently in Tanzania and will be spending nearly 3 weeks with us before going back to The States. We will show them both Prague and Olomouc. We hope to show them the beauty of this country, but most importantly, the spiritual need here.
